Before he got up, Shona slipped off to her room and cried herself to sleep. It hurt scrolling through his wife’s Facebook page filled with pictures of the cutest kids. His son, almost eighteen, looked just like him while their daughter Storm, the cutest six-year-old, was a lighter, tanned version of her mother. Then their youngest, CJ, was the nicest blend of the two, stealing Shona’s heart.
Even when she looked at the pictures of only he and his wife, she could tell he was happy. Although she denied it to herself, she wanted that too. But her heart was damaged, unable to recognize what real love looked like.
He stood up and yawned, trying hard not to wake Kaleela up. He remembered turning over at some point, not feeling Shona’s legs at the other end of the sectional. He could have taken off then, but he wanted to see her one last time before his day got started.
He patted his pockets, looking for his cell. With only the dim light that seeped inside from the sun, he squinted, hoping to see it nearby.
“You’re looking for this?” Shona asked him, holding his cell in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.
Gone was her Hello Kitty onesie, now wearing a pair of black boy shorts and a hot pink tank top. Shona's ass was still sitting up right as he grunted, pretending to clear his throat. Her hair wrapped up tightly in a black wrap exposed her freshly washed face that was blemish-free. She was effortlessly beautiful to him.
“Good morning,” he said, clearing his throat once more as he walked towards her. “Still love pink.”
“Yup, why not?” she replied with a shrug, feeling naked under his gaze.
“Looks good on you.” To that she said nothing, a pregnant pause in the air when he said, “Thanks.”
When he grabbed it, she looked away, almost holding her breath as she fought hard not to look at him before she walked inside of the kitchen. He wasn’t expecting much conversation, but he could tell she was in deep thought. Not going too deep, he wanted to make sure they were good before he took off to head home, following her.
Since getting married, he’d never spent a Christmas morning away from his kids and his wife. Even though he didn’t mean to stay out all night, he knew he needed to make this visit count.
“And thank you for last night,” he said, the hairs on her body standing as soon as she heard his voice. Its raspy texture tugging at her soul.
“No problem,” she said, taking slow sips. He could smell the hazelnut coffee brewing, reminding him of home. Myriah was a huge coffee drinker, from a fresh breakfast blend to a dark roast, but it was the hazelnut aroma that did it for him.
“I’m surprised you’re up early.” He walked up behind her as she placed her cup down on the counter, turning around with a forced smile.
“I couldn’t sleep,” she whispered, not wanting to look at him but she did. He gently embraced her, placing his chin on the top of her head. She felt good, warm, familiar and like his.
“Sorry ‘bout that, ma,” he said, releasing her. “I know me coming through unannounced was rude as fuck, but I do appreciate you letting me park for the night in your spot. I sort of needed to clear the air between us. Shit just hasn’t felt right since that day. I’ve been trying to do this for a minute.”
She shrugged her shoulders, causing him to hug her even more when he saw she was trying to be tough. He lifted her chin, giving her a soft peck on the lips. When he did, he didn’t want to let go, but he had to. He knew Shona. She was loyal to a fault and that fault was him in human form.
